ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to review the school’s transition process in the light of parent and pupil surveys, available literature about this and others’ good practice, to ascertain its efficacy in meeting the needs of students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It also considers the effectiveness of our promotional materials and activities in giving parents the confidence to choose a selective setting for a child with SEND. As admission to the school requires pupils to have passed the 11+ test, it is critical for a school claiming to be inclusive that this first step towards becoming a student is accessible to pupils with SEND. A selection of transition forms available online were reviewed and their content informed the production of new primary school transition forms. School leaders need to have a clear understanding of their pupils’ achievements in primary school and build on them effectively from the day they start secondary school life’.
