ABSTRACT
This chapter will offer some ideas regarding the major attempts at introducing technological innovations in Mexican silver mining throughout its history. By stressing the foreign origin of those innovations, it will try to reveal the nature and importance of local conditions in maintaining particular forms of mining organisation, which despite being considered ‘unscientific’ and backward, supported the production of one of the larger exporters of silver since the sixteenth century.
