ABSTRACT
This chapter analyses the situation of temporary migration between Asia and the Netherlands, based on 119 interviews. Although the Netherlands does not have an official temporary migration policy, all immigration is supposed to be temporary in nature: migrants are issued one-year residence permits which must be renewed. Migration policy is generally rather restrictive, except for the highly-skilled; however, this group faces problems with integration. The research uncovered serious data problems, particularly in regards to temporary emigration from the Netherlands. The development impact of temporary migration for developing countries is uncertain because the rate of remittance-sending amongst interviewees was low.
