ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how increasing temporary migratory movements have affected Finnish policies on migration and asylum and how these policies have affected people’s migration trajectories. Temporary transnational migration creates both challenges and opportunities to migrants and to the Finnish society. We argue that there is inconsistency in political goals and authorities’ actual practices that affect migrants’ lives. We also elaborate on what kind of consequences the economic goals of the Finnish migration policies have on migrants’ lives. In addition, we discuss the socio-cultural aspects of temporary migration and argue that there are various challenges in terms of temporary migrants’ integration. Eventually, we discuss the developmental aspects and policy implications of temporary migration in Finland.
