ABSTRACT

As a sending country, Thai migrants in Europe comprise mainly seasonal migrant workers and marriage migrants. As a receiving state, the major groups of European immigrants are skilled migrants, marriage migrants and lifestyle migrants. This chapter aims to explore transformative characteristics of temporary migration between Thailand and Europe and analyse impacts and challenges of temporary migration on development. Policy recommendations are also provided to address challenges faced by Thai and European migrants. The mobility of temporary migration between Thailand and Europe can be improved by better protection of Thai seasonal migrants to reduce labour exploitation; formulating policies and strategies aimed at supporting the well-being of Thai migrants during the migration process; and streamlining Thai immigration policy, laws and procedures.
