ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the relationship between the user and digital lexicographical resources from different points of view. In the first part, we present a brief historical review of digital lexicography in the field of Spanish language and summarize the main features of online versus printed dictionaries. In the second part, we outline the state of the art of empirical studies on the use of online dictionaries and the needs and expectations of users. Finally, within the framework of digital lexicography, we reflect on the relationship between the use of dictionaries and the skills available to the user to solve specific communication needs. This reflection leads to the formulation of a series of objective parameters based on the basic lexicographic skill of being able to select an appropriate lexicographic resource.
