ABSTRACT
Pragmatics studies the use of a language in specific contexts. Considering lexicography from a pragmatic perspective, we identify two objects of analysis in this chapter: first, the analysis of lexicographic works as linguistic messages and, second, how lexicography incorporates those aspects of language use concerning pragmatics. The pragmatic study of the dictionary as message focuses on the addressees, the addresser, their shared identity, and some of the limitations of written language. Regarding the pragmatic information in dictionary entries, we address two aspects here: the lexis, and the microstructure of the entries. The chapter concludes with some proposals for improving the pragmatic information in Spanish lexicography.
