ABSTRACT

The Indian coal industry, in the course of its development, evolved three main structural forms, captive collieries owned by consumer interests; collieries controlled by managing agents who also financed and operated a number of other industries; and private collieries operating in small units representing individual enterprises. A company named Bharat Coking Coal Limited was formed and entrusted with the management of all coking coal mines. Thus Coal India Limited (CIL) was given wide and comprehensive authority to co-ordinate and execute the programme and policies in respect of the nationalised coal industry in its various operating regions. The CIL headquarters has senior and experienced officers in various disciplines, who have been designated as Chiefs of the various divisions. Central Coal Marketing Organisation (CCMO) was set up with the ultimate responsibility for the entire coal marketing functions. The formulation of CCMO was with the objective of enabling the producing subsidiaries to concentrate on production and project management functions.
