ABSTRACT

The Salzgitter Group runs a wide range of industrial operations: iron and steel production and trade, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, industrial plant construction, drilling for oil and gas and many industrial services. At the helm of the Group is Salzgitter AG in Salzgitter, a holding company, whose capital shares are wholly held by the Federal Republic of Germany and are controlled by the Federal Minister of Finance in Bonn. In 1936 a plan providing for the exploitation of the Salzgitter ores was submitted, which served as a basis for the foundation of the industrial complex of Salzgitter. While emphasis in the Ilseder iron and steel works had traditionally been on the sectional steel sector, the Salzgitter iron and steel works produced mainly flat rolled steel, so that the two production ranges were complementary to one another. A similar effect in terms of increasing the economic strength of the region stems from the large-scale plant export of the concern.
