ABSTRACT

The holding company, National Fertilizer Corporation of Pakistan Limited (NFC), was set up in 1973. More than 71% of Pakistan’s population lives in rural areas and a majority of all persons in employment depend for their livelihood on agriculture. The Government of Pakistan has been making concerted efforts over the years to improve agricultural productivity through the use of fertilisers. Pakistan has eight fertiliser manufacturing facilities at present. Three of these are in the private sector and the remaining five form the National Fertilizer Corporation group, which accounts for nearly 52% of the total nitrogenous and 100% of phosphatic fertiliser manufacturing capacity in the country. NFC is one of these corporations. All the PIDC fertiliser plants and projects were transferred to it, along with the private sector project which had been nationalised in 1972. NFC inherited an investment of Rs. 160 million in the operating units transferred to it from PIDC during 1973/74.
