ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the liminal existences of the Black girl protagonist Starr in Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give. This chapter offers a critical content analysis of the relationship between author Angie Thomas and her Black girl protagonist Starr, as she grapples with her Black girl identity in the midst of grief and trauma. Implications of the analysis consider not only the importance of Black women writers sharing the multiplicities of Black girls’ stories for the purposes of visibility and understanding, but also the necessity of writing for their own personal development and understanding of self.
