ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the perceptions of six Black adolescent girls regarding the usefulness of their computers and other digital tools at a one-to-one technology school. The findings of this study shed light on how authentic purposes for digital literacies are not fulfilled in their classrooms. Despite their preferences for using digital tools for their own purposes, the girls in this study explain the multiple drawbacks of the ways digital technology is used in their classrooms. The chapter concludes with several implications for research and practice.
