ABSTRACT

The authors in this section gathered around a virtual kitchen table, using the online platform Zoom, to engage in conversation around shared ideas and guiding questions about Black girls’ literacies practices. They participated in a conversation where they talked across their respective work as literacy educators and scholars who foreground Black feminist/womanist epistemologies in their personal, social, and professional lives. This kitchen table talk is organized around these sub questions:

Why is it critical that educators acknowledge Black girls’ literacies in their work?

Why is it important to create spaces for Black girls’ literacies both in and out of schools?

How are Black girls’ literacies honored in your work?

When you think about spaces for Black girls, what are important considerations for the field of literacy education?

What practical recommendations would you offer educators working with Black girls?

In the sections that follow, we highlight our dialogic exchanges in response to these questions and conclude with final words of wisdom. To recreate our kitchen table talk, we video-recorded our Zoom chat and transcribed the video. Each section that follows captures key points that were made to address the guiding questions.
