ABSTRACT

Gratitude journaling is a literacy practice that can be defined as individuals regularly recognizing specific life experiences that they are thankful for. This chapter highlights two Black girls’ ability to be vulnerable through gratitude journaling in the South Bronx. As a Black educator, it is my responsibility to be unapologetically Black and to provide space for Black girls to do the same. Further, I have found that when Black girls see one another, it gives them room to be themselves. It also gives them space to explore their complex identities as Black girls, as they are not a monolithic group. Educators therefore need to be attentive to differences among Black girlhood. This chapter is committed to the wholeness of Black girls and how to create literate spaces for them to tap into their Black girl magic. Implications for writing and journaling for self-expression are offered for learning spaces in and out of schools.
