ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to summarize the historical movement around media education over the last 50 years in Latin America. We are living in this historical moment, a time of hopes in relation to media education. Recent achievements in the epistemological and strategic perspectives in this field show us that we are on the right track. The literature on the subject is accessible to an increasing number of people, and many experiences show us how far we have gone. In terms of media education development, it is possible to identify from isolated experiences centered in the hands of teachers to complex initiatives under public education policies. However, not all Latin American countries have the same level of commitment. As a moving landscape, this chapter will illustrate the efforts made in our region by many leaders in the academic and in the community levels to bring media education as well as educommunication into the local pedagogical processes.
