ABSTRACT

Richards illustrated the cultural capital that many European cities offered within their historic centres, that cultural capital helped to fuel interest in heritage tourism, and that many European capital cities were in competition for the heritage tourist. Over the current decade, it would be a fair assumption to state that the field of research on cultural and heritage tourism in relation to cities is one resembling maturity. A major strand of research has been linked to the relationship of cultural and heritage tourism and the regeneration of certain spaces in the contemporary city. The history of tourism will reveal that cities have played host in the past to major events and festivals, they are where different cultural groups would coalesce and maintain their traditions and cultures.
