ABSTRACT

Cities, by their nature, draw visitors for many reasons and might therefore all be termed tourism cities. This chapter explores Indoor and outdoor markets can satisfy these requirements and hence contribute to the visitor retail and overall experience in a manner. Traditional retail markets are public spaces comprising stallholders who occupy indoor or outdoor sites, and many are well established. Urban markets are more likely to be shared by resident and visitor populations than those in beach resorts catering to holidaymakers, for example, but some exist primarily to serve tourists. These and certain speciality markets are not rooted in the locale so that there is no supposed authenticity or community space to be endangered. Shopping opportunities are more confined in neighbouring Macau, but a large outdoor market selling food, flowers and clothing and two flea markets are advertised.
