ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by assessing the search for alternative development strategies as part of a wider scheme of urban competition and the quest for alternate strategic directions. It examines the role of a new infrastructure, sports and stadium development and convention centre development. Increasingly, the people can observe that private sector participation entails investment, ownership and/or management in the building of the city. The use of private-public partnerships in the development of urban tourism and the building of the city of leisure has become a very common sought-after strategy. The purpose of public subsidies then is to induce private investment and entice commerce ventures. Private-public partnerships in tourism can be found in many cities, large and small, across the United States. There are numerous examples of public-private partnerships, from infrastructure development to even marketing tourism. Primary facilities and services include historic, cultural and/or entertainment districts, convention centres, stadiums, performing arts centres.
