ABSTRACT

Two segments of the sharing economy, in particular, are impacting tourism cities: peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation. This chapter includes a brief examination of new segments of the sharing economy that may impact tourism. It examines the nascent food-sharing industry dominated by companies like Eatwith and examines the potential impact to restaurants from sharing economy food delivery apps like Uber Eats and Postmates. The chapter examines the influence of crowdfunding on hospitality entrepreneurs as well as the impact of emerging niche markets on hospitality and tourism. Then the chapter also proposes ideas for future research related to the sharing economy in tourism cities. While the P2P accommodation segment is the part of the sharing economy which most directly competes with a traditional hospitality segment, ridesharing is no less impactful on the tourist experience.
