ABSTRACT

This chapter maintains that in the turbulent, uncertain, and increasingly complex environments that managers face today, mindfulness practice may be an effective solution to helping business students and managers make better decisions. Drawing on over 30 years of combined teaching experience in the global management arena, the authors offer their own experiences introducing mindfulness practices in the global classroom. They propose alternatives to traditional teaching methods to expand perspectives on culturally sensitive issues by exploring human nature and mindfulness teachings from theoretical and philosophical perspectives. They illustrate how mindfulness, which is gaining worldwide attention in a variety of organizational settings, can contribute to greater cultural sensitivity and personal growth to inspire creative, reflective thinking from diverse readers, especially during turbulent times. They describe a noticeable shift in perception of one’s external circumstances, offering readers a deeper understanding of how humans can learn to achieve a more intuitive and powerful nature through the steady practice of mindfulness. This chapter particularly benefits cross-cultural management educators who seek to develop their students’ cultural intelligence by enhancing their sensitivity toward others. Through mindfulness practice, educators can open their students’ minds to embrace cross-cultural diversity, deepening their desire to connect across borders during turbulent times.
