ABSTRACT

This chapter explores internal communication planning. The act of planning is highlighted as a process that is as important, if not more important, than the final plan itself. Creativity and strategic thinking for planning are examined and techniques are suggested for creative problem-solving. There is a vast array of internal communication tactics that can be used in most organisations. The Research-Assess-Decide-Act-Review model for planning is an overview of the core processes involved in strategic internal communication planning. Most planning approaches are linear processes. They suggest that steps are taken in a set order. However, it is worth noting that the way that organisations operate is often neither logical nor straightforward. Internal communication plans are informed by an assessment of the situation within an organisation and a deep appreciation of the culture, strategic direction, purpose, values, employee engagement and operational objectives.
