ABSTRACT
This chapter began as a dialogue between two, very differently positioned, geographers interested in sexual lives in contemporary cities. It explores some of the spaces that are created in more peripheral locations in cities around the world. The chapter recognises that globally these opportunities are primarily restricted to those people who already have some familiarity with the vocabulary of identity categories that have circulated from the North Atlantic world over the last century or so. It steps outside the ‘global gay imaginary’ to take a more pluriversal approach to sexual and gendered difference and to consider some of the spaces that sustain a more diverse range of ‘queer’ lives in cities around the world. The chapter decentres ‘global gay’ urban spaces to think in more decolonial and pluriversal ways about sexuality and gender.
