ABSTRACT

From Stone to Screen (FSTS) is an open-access, digital humanities initiative and artefact database comprising collections from the University of British Columbia. The authors of this chapter reveal the difficulties inherent in establishing a student-run, DH project and explore the variety of issues surrounding access and control that presented themselves, both technologically and institutionally. The authors found themselves fighting a Sisyphean battle against the obsolescence of digital resources and the precariousness of student-run projects, as well as striking a balance between the demands of an ambitious side project and their own academic careers. This chapter distils the lessons learned from their experience over the last 7 years and discusses how digital projects should always be planned and executed with consideration of financial constraints, changing technologies, and academic turnover.
