ABSTRACT

This case study presents work from a pilot study as part of my doctorate which focused on understanding of young children’s perspectives of work. Frankie (aged 4) was a key participant and is the main focus of the chapter. I draw on his various ways of communicating to present information about Frankie’s experiences of sharing his voice.

Throughout this case study, I will demonstrate how Frankie broadened his ability to communicate by participating in a research project. Frankie used a digital camera to create images of things he connected to the idea of ‘work’. Through his photographs, and discussions of them, he learned to communicate in new ways. Frankie’s experiences were transformative. The simple act of picking up a camera (and other research resources) helped Frankie to ‘speak’ with a louder, stronger voice.
