ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes an interview that was conducted with Justice Joe Williams, the first Māori Judge of the Supreme Court of Aotearoa New Zealand. Justice Williams touches on aspects of his judicial philosophy and describes some of the challenges that might be said to face the court system in our country. A particular area of challenge, and a key development in our law in recent years, is the increasing incorporation of Māori concepts into our state-based legal system. Justice Williams shares some thoughts on that and other topics and provides some fascinating, individual insights into the work done by senior judges in Aotearoa New Zealand.
