ABSTRACT

This chapter features Justice M.E. Birnie Stephenson, who is a native of Guyana in South America and since 2009 until the time of the interview in 2020 was serving as one of the Resident High Court Judges in Dominica. Trained in The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados campus in 1985 and Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago in 1987, she has had an illustrious career. The interview was conducted via Microsoft Teams in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Justice Stephenson clearly explained the paths of her trailblazing legal journey. Some of her most striking experiences were associated with being a woman and a foreign national working in Dominica, a nation that is highly divided politically. As a woman with strong Christian faith and a versatile musician, her insights have considerable implications for legal practitioners of various genders, races, and cultural backgrounds.
