ABSTRACT

This chapter contains an interview with a judge of the Appellate Court from a town in Serbia. In the interview, the progress and development of a judge’s professional career are described, as well as the challenges of most judges who build their career in a post conflict society with weak institutions and underdeveloped democracy face. The actual position of the courts and judges in Serbia nowadays is also portrayed in the interview. It is characterized by the frequent amendments of the law with the aim of adapting to European legal standards, as well as delayed implementation of the law due to the complex social milieu and the social condition the country is in today. Apart from this, the interview reveals the judge’s attitude toward theory and practice and cooperation with universities. The judge emphasizes the educational importance of the seminars organized for judges by the American Embassy in Belgrade.
