ABSTRACT

This section focuses on Dr. Irving André, a judge of African-Caribbean origins who since 2002 has been serving as a superior court judge in Canada. Dr. André, born on the island of Curaçao to parents of Dominica citizenship, has practiced law, mainly criminal law, for over 30 years in various capacities. He continues to be involved in a variety of community groups in Canada and Dominica. This interview, conducted via Zoom in 2020, reveals in-depth information about Justice André’s distinguished career. It highlights several challenges and triumphs faced in his career as an immigrant of minority status, his commitment to social justice issues particularly, equal access to justice, and his international contributions to the practice of law. This chapter provides considerable insights to legal scholars and practitioners of various backgrounds, especially those whose socially constructed biographies do not match significantly with the dominant racialized context of the settings within which they primarily serve.
