ABSTRACT

This chapter argues for clear specification of the values guiding decisions and for informing policy directions. It considers predictions for future employment, and then broadens out to look beyond employment to include the views of parents, before considering which values are important. International studies have looked at the way that employment is changing and how this might affect people’s lives. While there are many disagreements about just how the changes will affect people, it is possible that more people will feel insecure, and that society and employment will be more fractured. It is also important to emphasize that most of the values and skills identified previously have a social and emotional base. These are important in the workplace where increasingly people have to collaborate. People come with different specialisms, cultures and attitudes which can all contribute to solving problems and completing tasks.
