ABSTRACT

The architecture of online spaces, like that of physical spaces, affects behaviour in ways that are often outside of our conscious awareness (Seaman, 2008). This chapter explores the discursive and normative dynamics of peer-to-peer (P2P) interactions and the mechanisms of the discursive enforcement of these norms. The chapter examines how monitoring and enforcement of sanctions impact individuals’ relationship with the group and their disposition towards cooperation. Such complexity can lead to unforeseen consequences for those who transgress. The chapter argues that though P2P regulation of online speech is challenging, steps can be taken to acknowledge these challenges and create spaces for free expression whilst also guarding against and effectively addressing antisocial speech.
