ABSTRACT

Beauty standards are different all over the world and ever evolving throughout time. Still, whether conscious or unconscious, symmetry is a universally recognized symbol of “beauty”. The human eye is drawn to proportioned faces and can be distracted by glaring asymmetries. In film and television “beauty makeup” is that which corrects asymmetries to keep viewers concentration on the most expressive parts of an actor's face – the mouth and the eyes. Christine Sciortino arms makeup artists with techniques to correct imperfections and create symmetry with highlighting and contouring, ensuring our attention remains on the action. Sciortino closes out the chapter with how to build on this base for scenes where characters need a pop of drama – for a more dressed up look.
