ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Salisbury Square, off Fleet Street, where Edward Lloyd offices were located, as a specific nexus of print culture and cultural production. Lloyd’s offices were located in some proximity to the financial district in the City, to the Inns of Court and legal London, to the bohemian world of Covent Garden, to the theatres of the West End and to the Corridors of Power in Westminster. Lloyd rode the tide of mass publishing. Lloyd was a classic Eminent Victorian entrepreneur, creating a business that came to employ a large number of people. In 1843 Lloyd moved his business to Samuel Richardson’s former residence in Salisbury Square. Lloyd owned a major culture industry or brand, the use of his own name on so many of his publications. The Lloyd world became a national brand, but it was always linked to the print culture of London.
