ABSTRACT

The Mao cult represents a notable example of charismatic authority in totalitarian societies. Explanations for the power of Mao’s charisma tend to focus on the figure of Mao himself – his political acumen and ability to manipulate followers. This chapter analyzes the personality cult from the perspective of its organizational development and accompanying violence. Expanding analysis of the Mao cult beyond the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution reveals deeper parallels between modern China and other totalitarian societies, particularly with regard to the central role of the “movement” in engendering both violence and dependence.
