ABSTRACT
This chapter explores Max Weber’s use of the examples of revolutionary movements, moments, and individuals to develop a key concept – charisma – in his political sociology. The intellectual influences of Nietzsche, engagement with anarchist and syndicalist thought (from Robert Michels and others), and his entanglement with the German countercultures which overlapped into his familial, friendship, and intellectual circles are stressed.
