ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of military leaders during the late Republic but also discusses the charismatic aspect in the reign of Roman emperors and late antique warlords. First, I analyze the charismatic leadership of Republican military leaders such as Marius, Sulla, Pompey, and Julius Caesar. Second, I discuss how Augustus established the imperial monarchy, which was veiled with the appearance of Republican magistracies. Then, I examine imperial charisma from the early imperial period (1st century CE) until the late Roman Empire (4th century) and its development in the Christian Roman Empire. Finally, I look at the late antique warlords.
