ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines effective teaching and learning strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, which are supported by key research findings. These include building relationships through valuing home language and culture, and connecting with students’ families and home life; practising culturally responsive teaching through adapting the curriculum and implementing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pedagogies; and empowering learners by holding high expectations and through developing Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs). Using these strategies, the chapter aims to promote inclusion through the effective differentiation of teaching and learning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. How these strategies are implemented can vary greatly according to the environmental context, school, teachers, and students. The authors use real-life examples to demonstrate how these teaching and learning strategies can be implemented in the classroom to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and ensure equitable learning outcomes.
