ABSTRACT

This chapter describes group therapy for adults who stammer in a range of contexts, focusing primarily on the City Lit way of working. City Lit is an adult-education college in London. Its speech therapy department, a national centre of excellence in adult stammering therapy, has been offering group therapy for the past fifty years. Over time, different therapeutic approaches have been trialled, evaluated and modified. Syllable-timed speech, slow prolonged speech and vocal fold management are examples of approaches primarily focused on fluency that have at some stage been part of courses offered for a PWS. The model of therapy described here is a seven day intensive course for a PWS. To elicit a common stammering vocabulary, each PWS is asked to imagine that a Martian has landed on earth and has no vocabulary to describe stammering.
