ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the salient core proficiencies comprising the psychological services and how psychologists have generated knowledge about and applied it to police use of force. It deals with a discussion of core assessment-related activities: job task analysis, preemployment evaluations, and the fitness-for-duty evaluation. The chapter describes how a psychologist may approach the delivery of psychological intervention services from preservice training to psychological interventions. It reviews the psychological and social science data on police use of force and other psychological topics central to police operations in the area. Industrial-organizational psychologists contribute much to what psychologists, police agencies, and its employees know about what police do at work. A pre-offer suitability screening involves evaluating a police job applicant yet to receive a conditional offer of employment from the police hiring authority. There are psychological consequences of being a police officer besides what predispositions, traits, and experiences officers bring with them to the job.
