ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on stress and negative outcomes in police officers. It presents the literature on interventions designed to help officers effectively manage work-related stress, and ameliorate specific mental health problems. Police researchers have identified two main sources of work-related stress: occupational and organizational stressors, also referred to as job content related vs. job context related, respectively. There are several programs in place designed to foster hardiness and resilience in police officers. Perhaps the most valuable intervention programs are those that prevent problems from happening in the first place. Such interventions become standard training for new officers. One challenge faced by police officers involves shift work. Shift work can be defined as work that occurs outside the traditional 9–5 workday. It is well documented that shift workers have been found to be at heightened risk for sleep disorders.
