ABSTRACT

Maintaining healthy habits that provide the proper energy and quality of life is a primary goal for any individual, but particularly for law enforcement personnel. There are long-term consequences of unhealthy habits. The human body will respond unfavorably to leading a sedentary lifestyle, not engaging in regular exercise, poor diet, high stress, and poor sleep. Law enforcement is a profession that requires extensive physical stamina as well as successful adaptation to an array of stressful events. The Disconnected Values Model (DVM) includes an intervention component that reflects the person’s sense of purpose, that is, “the energy derived from connecting to deeply held values and a purpose beyond one’s self-interest”. While the DVM is intended as a form of brief therapy that can be administered by individuals without a credential as a mental health professional, client issues may surface prior to or during the program that may require the services of a licensed psychologist or therapist.
