ABSTRACT

Michigan’s 11th District is located in suburban Detroit and includes a number of communities in parts of both Oakland and Wayne Counties. The most prominent geographic feature of the district is that much of it is located in the western parts of Wayne and Oakland Counties, but the district also includes communities in the eastern portion of Oakland County—including Auburn Hills, Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, and a small part of Rochester Hills. The relatively high median income, educational attainment, and racial and ethnic composition of the district led it to be—on paper at least—a district that leaned toward the GOP. The primary election for the 11th District was held on August 7, 2018. As with many congressional races, the campaign for this seat began over a year before the election. But Trott’s announcement in September 2017 changed the dynamic in the district generally, and for Stevens in particular.
