ABSTRACT

Regional tourism development in Asia has great market potential. Especially for rural communities looking to increase their economic growth, getting involved in the tourism sector is seen as a solution when other natural resource-based industries such as logging, mining, or fishing are in a state of decline. Community-based tourism (CBT) has been at the forefront of the promotion of regional development, especially in the developing world. Cambodia as a nation is still on the UN’s Least Developed Countries list and the majority of the population resides in rural areas. This chapter discusses the role of governance in CBT, followed by two cases that highlights different types of CBT development in Cambodia.
