ABSTRACT

Despite victories for female football players both on and off the football field, women’s football continues to face inequality in many areas. The consistent growth in girl’s and women’s participation, the rising popularity of women’s football, and the successes of the US Women’s National Team have propelled women’s football into the national spotlight. Despite much on-field success including World Cup and Olympic gold medals, major issues involving FIFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation, including differential pay, and differential treatment regarding being forced to play on artificial turf have marred the success. These issues have highlighted that discrimination, sexism, and the marginalization of the team continue to plague the sport.
