ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes the notion of technique to describe the movement pattern in isolation from a game/dance/sequence or context of an activity. It deals with an explanation of the underlying importance of observation with respect to lesson organisation and management. It moves on to the central role of observation in pupil learning. The chapter outlines the notion of the teacher as a communicator and highlights the teacher’s language facility. Observation is a fundamental and essential skill for those teaching physical education. The knowledgeable observer would have a wide vocabulary of words to describe the butterfly, its habitat, structure and behaviour. A facility with language, for example a wide-ranging vocabulary, precise description and the ability to conjure pertinent imagery, is conducive to the development of inspirational teaching when used in response to insightful observation. A sound knowledge of the pupils as individuals can also helps to pick up valuable key information.
