ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the narratives of the elders of their everyday cultural traditions and pastoralist worldview as explained in the traditional indigenous knowledge of the Turkana people. The narratives present the cultural scientific view of the pastoralist and how this relates to how the people interpret and make predictions about their natural world. The Turkana calendar and the study of the universe to make climate predictions is elaborated by the narratives. The life of Turkana herdsmen and how it informs the socialization of children is fairly articulated in the paper. The Turkana are fire makers and hydrologists. This knowledge, and how it is passed to the next generation, is described in the chapter. The paper concludes by giving examples of some of the folktales the Turkana narrates to children as socialization mechanisms for transmitting in children the cultural values of the community.
