ABSTRACT

There comes a time in the life of most devotees of electronic sound when one acknowledges the fact that circuits make very cool noises but computers often can produce more interesting control structures. Many of us are content to link our computers to our circuits and enjoy the mix. But others recoil from the prospect of analog and digital cohabitation. One solution to this conundrum lies in neural networks——a form of analog computing modeled on the behavior of synapses in the brain. Analog computation was surprisingly widespread until the 1970s, when digital technologies took over. Usually, an operational amplifier (op amp) is the core of most analog computers. “Confetti” is a multi-connect modular electronic computation system. Each single module is capable of one specific operation. When combined, these modules can solve quite complex formulas, such as strange attractors.
