ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the experiences of three racial incidents across two Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) by comparing two vantage points, that of a Black woman doctoral student with that of a Black woman tenure-track faculty member. Comparing and contrasting these two different positionalities (i.e., student and faculty) sheds light on systemic patterns of racism across institutions and the ways such incidents are experienced emotionally, personally, and professionally. Issues of organizational decision-making, tokenism, and faculty service are explored. Recommendations for fostering resilience are made for individuals and institutions of higher education.
