ABSTRACT

Despite the many gains made since the Truman era Commission on Higher Education and the civil rights era, there is still unfinished social justice business in higher education, the problems of diversity remain, and answers are elusive. In response, this chapter presents a perspectival framework for understanding the intricacies of diversity issues, notably, Rittel and Webber’s (1973) “wicked problems” framework. Further, this chapter articulates the possibilities and applications of a social ecological framework (Bronfenbrenner, 1977) as a multilevel approach to comprehensively and effectively frame and address diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. Finally, promising practices weaving together critical claims from each chapter are presented.
