ABSTRACT

Experiential and immersive learning has been used for many years in other practice-based disciplines but to date, uptake within the police forces appears to have been limited. With increasing numbers of police preparation programmes being moved into Higher Education, the creation of dual processing learning environments embedded with scenario-based learning, enables innovated pedagogical mechanisms to be used to accelerate decision-making in officers. Scenario-based learning facilitates a safe, low risk environment where mistakes can be made and learned from and effective mental models developed. Depending on the technology used, there is scope within AI for the learning environment itself to be layered and to adapt to the learner. We assert that combining the dual process of decision-making framework presented within this chapter, with scenario-based training could accelerate decision-making in officers.
