ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I call attention to a blind spot in much diversity and critical diversity research, namely, inequality as a consequence of social closure as first conceptualized by Weber. Specifically, I place at stake doing our research differently to undo social closure around our place of work to advance equality by including and recognizing alternative knowledge claims made by people other than proper academics: people, radical others who belong to the demos (Rancière) and who take liberties. The radical other makes a difference to equality in a way that including difference by means of much (critical) diversity management does not: namely, by changing the terms of inclusion in favor of more equality, as opposed to more difference and diversity, which does not necessarily deliver equality.
